When you’ll get your kit

We will text or email you when your kit is on its way. Here’s when you can expect your kits:

  • First kit:  in the last few months of 2024
  • Second kit: in the first few months of 2025

Fire ants are most active in the warmer months, so these are good times to treat your property.

If you received free kits last year, you’ll get 2 kits this year. If you've moved house, let us know:

If you no longer want to receive a kit, you can opt out.

Why you should order a kit

Fire ants can harm people, pets, livestock, and agriculture. They can also have devastating effects on our environment, economy, health, and outdoor lifestyle.

Treating your property will help eradicate fire ants from Australia by 2032.

In 2023, over 41,000 households treated their properties. The more we treat our properties, the less chance fire ants have to take hold.

How and when to use the kit

Your kit includes treatment products and detailed instructions. Use the treatment as soon as you get it. The amount of treatment product in your kit will be based on your property size.

Follow the instructions, read the product label, and note any restrictions that apply to your individual circumstances.

Choose a clear day when it hasn’t rained for at least 48 hours and there is no rain forecast for the next 48 hours. Don’t water, mow or disturb the area for 48 hours after you've applied it.

See how to apply the treatment.

Transcript

We see a nest of fire ants, and in front of them, the text: Treating fire ants on your property.

Then, a man takes a parcel out of his mailbox. A woman opens her parcel and pulls out a container of fire ant treatment, and a brochure.

Narrator: Once you receive your free fire and treatment kit, applying the product is easy.

The brochure is open on a table, showing instructions. The woman, wearing gloves, peels back the label on her treatment bottle.

Narrator: Before you start treating, make sure you read the “How to use your fire ant product” brochure and the label on the product bottle.

Now, we see an overhead view of a sunny, tree-lined suburban street. The woman checks the weather on her mobile phone. It shows fine conditions for the coming few days.

Narrator: Choose a clear day to apply your treatment where there's no rain expected and none forecast for the next two days.

Still wearing gloves, the woman peels back the protective film from her bottle.

Another man, wearing gloves, closed-toe shoes and long trousers, walks slowly through a garden. He is gently shaking a bottle of treatment. We then see the treatment granules falling into the grass.

Narrator: Remove the seal from your fire ant treatment product and shake a light sprinkle over the areas you are treating.

We see a close-up of vegetable seedlings in a garden bed. A woman walks along the edge of her garden, sprinkling the treatment.

Narrator: And if you're growing veggies, sprinkle the fire ant product between the rows or around the plants.

Two people are mowing and watering their garden, in a split-screen. Red crosses appear over each side of the screen.

Narrator:  Do not mow, water or disturb the treated area for 48 hours after treatment.

We see a close-up of several fire ants carrying treatment granules.

Narrator:  The product stops the queen from producing viable and reproductive offspring.

You should apply the product even if the fire ants aren't visible as they can be under the ground or on a nearby property.

The woman from the start of the video applies the treatment to the lawn outside her home.

We go back to the brochure and scan across the page. A QR code is visible.

Narrator:  And lastly, don't forget to record your treatment by scanning our QR code in the “How to use your fire ant product”  brochure.

The man from the beginning of the video is crouching down at the foot of a tree, taking a photo of a small pile of dirt. A girl and a dog are in the background, staying clear.

Narrator:  If you do find a fire ant nest, make sure you report it by calling us on 132 ANT or visit fireants.org.au.
